What the AI companion actually does

The Verity Companion AI is a layered dialogue engine. Each personality tracks four variables: trust, curiosity, safety, and risk. The variables tick up or down based on the dialogue choices you pick. The four variables

• Trust — increases when you let the companion finish a monologue. Gates the pacifist ending.
• Curiosity — increases when you probe optional objects. Gates the hidden rooms documented in the how to find secret rooms guide.
• Safety — increases when you pick cautious dialogue. Lowers the jumpscare threshold.
• Risk — increases when you pick risky dialogue. Raises the jumpscare threshold but unlocks the bonus room.

How variables interact

Trust and curiosity are independent. Safety and risk are inverses — picking a safe option lowers risk by 1, and picking a risky option raises risk by 1. The companion surfaces a dialogue line whenever one of the variables crosses a threshold.

Personality overview

The five personalities tune the variables differently:

• Empath (Seren) — high safety, low risk, moderate trust, low curiosity.
• Skeptic (Vex) — moderate safety, moderate risk, low trust, high curiosity.
• Analyst (Tess) — moderate safety, low risk, moderate trust, moderate curiosity.
• Guardian (Brick) — high safety, low risk, moderate trust, low curiosity.
• Trickster (Loki) — low safety, high risk, low trust, high curiosity.

Mid-run swaps

Common mistakes

• Skipping the office scene lowers trust by 5 and locks you out of the pacifist ending.
• Selecting risky dialogue without pairing it with a Trickster run raises risk past the threshold and triggers an unwinnable jumpscare.
• Swapping personalities mid-run before Room 2 resets the variables for both personalities.
